5.22.25 |Tower on the Marsh—A Film Screening and Discussion on the Life & Work of Christiana Morgan

The Library welcomes Hilary Morgan, filmmaker and granddaughter of Christiana Morgan, the subject of Jung’s Vision Seminars, held from 1930-1934.  In attendance at these seminars were such participants as Erich Neumann, Barabara Hannah, Toni Wolff, C.A. Meier, Gerhard Adler, Eleanor Berinte, Linda Fierz-David, Michael Fordham, Esther Harding, and Mary Gordon among others, many of whom were part of Jung’s inner circle who would later carry the torch of Analytical Psychology forward into the next generation.

Christiana was Jung’s analysand from October to June of 1926. He felt that her visions, many of which were analyzed in the Seminars, reflected a similar and parallel experience to his own, recorded in the Red Book. Her ability to access images emerging from the collective unconscious made her inner work endlessly fascinating to Jung, and what she created to describe her experiences was, in his mind, deserving of a place in the history of Analytical Psychology.

Christiana Morgan was publicly known as a lay analyst at Harvard University where she was credited as lead author of the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), one of the most widely used projective psychology tests. Years later, her co-author Harry Murray removed her name.

Hilary Morgan has created an aesthetically stunning film on her grandmother’s life and work, Tower of Dreams, centered around the place where Christiana engaged in her active imaginations: “The Tower on the Marsh.” Her film brings viewers inside the Tower and up close to the paintings, stained glass windows, and woodworking within – the fruits of Christiana’s inner work. Ms. Morgan will report on the status of the Tower following her grandmother’s death, and share her mission to preserve this important emblem of individuation for future generations.  She will also entertain questions about the film and about her grandmother’s life and work, in particular. Hilary Morgan, Filmmaker

As an emerging filmmaker and cinematographer, I was influenced by the rich culture of progressive and experimental filmmaking found in the San Francisco Bay Area. Decades of work on documentaries inspired me to combine filmmaking styles with the use of personal and experimental imagery to expand the creative boundaries of film. I began to work with the subject of dreams, combining nonfiction and poetic storytelling.

It was while making my third film on the cultural exploration and interpretation of dreams, I realized this was also my grandmother’s life work. “The Tower of Dreams” is a short documentary about my grandmother, Christiana Morgan, and her creative and spiritual relationship with a stone tower she had built on a tidal river in Massachusetts.
