Living Into Whole Type: Expanding Jung’s Typology into the 21st Century

This workshop is based on a recent article published in the Journal of Analytical Psychology (London) for the 100th anniversary of the publication of Jung’s Vol. 6 in the Collected Works, Psychological Types. Jung’s early type-theory forms the basis for many current typological inventories. In this workshop, participants will explore their psychological type in the context of this newly expanded application of Jung’s typology.

Understanding the personality, one’s own and others’,  is a prominent field of study that has deep roots in ancient practices, medieval treatises, esoteric systems (such as the enneagram and astrology), and all manner of contemporary psychological models.  In the last several decades, the Myers-Briggs Typological Inventory has dominated typological studies from a Jungian perspective.

No doubt each of these systems has something to offer the curious seeker who wants to explore ways in which to meet the world with less conflict and more discernment, success, acceptance, and love.

C.G. Jung’s pioneering work in this field, set within the rich tapestry of his immense, life-long contribution to the study and understanding of the psyche, yields a model of the personality that offers a way, first, to understand ego patterns, and then to get beyond the levels of persona and ego, and to enter into the realm of soul and the archetypal Self.

Angelo Spoto’s expansion of Jung’s early groundbreaking work on type, likewise, honors the individual and reaches beyond typology, as Jung intended, with a model that respects the wild card that IS the unconscious and gestures toward the overarching ineffable mystery of the human being.
